An upper endoscopy uses a scope to evaluate and diagnose digestive disorders that may affect the throat, stomach, or part of the small intestines. The endoscope, a tube with a camera and light, is passed down through the mouth to view the upper digestive tract.  This particular procedure includes taking a tissue sample.

The procedure’s price varies a lot as it can be done in a number of settings – like a doctor’s office, an outpatient center, or a hospital outpatient department. 

Alternatives tests to examine this upper part of the digestive system are a barium x-ray or a sonogram.  These imaging machines are ways to take pictures of the digestive system but not to take tissue samples or remove growths.
