Delivery of Baby Routine Vaginal

Vaginal Delivery

About This Procedure:

Vaginal delivery, typically done without surgery, is the most common and most often the safest birth. During labor, the uterus tightens and the  cervix widens. This allows the mom to use her body to push the baby out through the birth canal.

Most vaginal deliveries are done in the hospital with a short stay to recover.  If labor doesn’t start on its own the mom may get medications to  start or speed up the birth.

Vaginal delivery is less expensive than a cesarean-section delivery as the C-section requires surgery. A C-section delivery starts with a cut in the mom's belly and uterus. Then the baby is pulled through this opening in the belly. This approach to delivery is common if there are safety risks to the mom or baby.
