About This Procedure:

A swab test is used to look for signs of sexually transmitted disease (STD).  A swab is brushed over the cervix to take a sample of cells. Other swabs may be repeated on the throat, rectum, or the lining of the eye if needed. The sample is sent to the test lab.

This particular test is for chlamydia infection – sexually active women who are younger than 25 or who are having unprotected sex, sex with multiple partners, or who may be pregnant should be tested.  Chlamydia infections are treated with antibiotics.

This test usually is done at a doctor’s office or a lab.  Tests for other STDs, like gonorrhea, may be done at the same time at a somewhat higher price.  There is a self-test for women to collect a sample from their vagina or urine and send it to the test lab.  Most, but not all, insurance plans cover STD testing as part of routine wellness exams, at no or low cost to the patient.
