About This Procedure:

In this surgery, called “TURP”, a thin metal tube with a camera and a laser is inserted into the opening at the end of the penis and passed into the tube that carries urine from the bladder, the urethra.  The prostate gland surrounds the urethra.  The laser is used to trim away extra prostate tissue that is blocking the flow of urine.  Removing this tissue helps with problems like frequent need to urinate, weak flow, dribbling or slow urination, and incontinence -- a lack of control in holding urine.

The surgery is done outpatient and the patient returns home the same day.  Patients can save money by shopping for this service as there may be many outpatient centers locally that offer this care.

Among the alternatives to TURP are other procedures that can be less damaging to the nearby tissue.  Depending on the extent of this condition, some patients manage their symptoms without surgery.  Some people find it helpful to do exercises to strengthen their pelvic floor, drink less alcohol and caffeine and sometimes medication are helpful.
