About This Procedure:

A PAP test is done to check for cervical cancer. Often done during a pelvic exam, a swab is brushed over the cervix to take a sample of cells. The sample is sent to the test lab.  An abnormal result can be due to inflammation, minor cell changes or, less frequently, cancer.

Follow-up care for an abnormal result often includes a more thorough exam using a scope to closely check the cervix and repeat PAP tests.

This test usually is done at a doctor’s office. Testing for the human papillomavirus (HPV) may be done at the same time at a somewhat higher price. Most, but not all, insurance plans cover the PAP test usually every three years, as part of a wellness exam, at no or low cost to the patient.
