About This Procedure:
A stress test is a way to check for heart disease. Your heart’s rhythm and the blood flow to the heart is measured while you walk or run on a treadmill or pedal an exercise bicycle. The test is used to sort out unexplained chest pain, shortness of breath, or unusual beating of the heart; to check the blood flow to your heart; or to study your heart valves.
The cost of the procedure depends on if it is done in a less costly setting like a doctor’s office compared to an outpatient clinic. EKG stress tests are less costly than several other types of stress tests. An echocardiogram stress test is similar except the heart is monitored using sound waves which shows blood flow more clearly. A nuclear stress test involves injection of a radioactive substance to show areas of the heart that are not getting enough blood. For those who are unable to exercise, a chemical stress test can be used to make the heart work hard as if you were exercising.
