A mammogram is an x-ray to check the health of breast tissue.   A diagnostic mammogram is done as a follow-up to an abnormal earlier exam or to check a lump, pain, nipple discharge or other changes in the breast.  In this exam, the woman’s breast is held in place and compressed with a plastic paddle while the x-ray is taken.

The procedure’s price can vary a lot as it is done in a number of settings – like a doctor’s office, an outpatient center, or a hospital outpatient department.

A 3-D mammography, or breast tomosynthesis, is an alternative to a standard mammogram.  This x-ray's three-dimensional image can show a clearer picture of the breast tissue depending upon a woman’s breast and situation.
